SAHSS 2024 Annual Meeting

The South Australian Hand Surgery Society Annual Meeting is going to be held in person on Friday 15th November 2024 at Mount Lofty House

Our Invited International Speakers for 2024 will be Mr Manu Sood and Mr Philip Matthew from London.

The meeting is the only forum in South Australia for those interested in surgery of the hand and the upper limb. It includes Hand Surgeons, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Occupational and rehabilitation Physicians, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Nurses, Surgical Trainees and others with an interest in the upper limb and the hand.

ASM 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM  |  Scientific Meeting (Lunch will be served at 12:30).

The AGM will follow the meeting and start at 5:30 PM, followed by dinner at 6:30 PM (Martha’s Restaurant).

Anyone interested in presenting at the meeting should email an abstract ASAP to Dr Nick Smith nws.smith@gmail.com Alternatively if you feel that any colleague or trainee may wish to present please give them this link and encourage them to contact Nick ASAP. Applicants will be notified if their presentation is accepted.

Invited Speakers

Mr Manu Sood

MS, MCh (Plast) FRCS(Plast) European Diploma Hand Surgery Senior

Mr Sood is Consultant Plastic and Hand Surgeon at the St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery, Chelmsford, UK. He is also the Medical Director for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology for Mid and South Essex NHS Trust.

His principal areas of interest are post trauma reconstruction, small joint arthroplasty including CMC joint replacement, management of the paralysed hand, reconstruction of scaphoid non-unions and surgical reconstruction of the upper extremity in patients with strokes and cerebral palsy.

He also holds an interest in clinical research and has published articles in peer reviewed journals. He is actively involved in postgraduate teaching, and is responsible for the training of the Senior Specialist Registrar in Hand Surgery attached to the Regional Plastic Surgery Unit. Mr Sood has been invited as Faculty on courses for Hand Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons, Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital, the University of Aberdeen and Anglia Ruskin University.

Mr Sood served on the Council of the BSSH between 2007 and 2010.

He has been an Examiner for the BSSH Hand Surgery Diploma from 2009 to 2013 and was on the Committee for Examination for the Diploma from 2015 to 2020.

He enjoys yoga, keeping fit, cooking, travel and tasting great wine.

Mr Philip Mathew

FRCS(Orth),DipHandSurg(Br)
Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon
Chelsea Hospital and Westminster Hospital, London

Mr Mathew is fellowship trained hand and wrist surgeon with his NHS practise at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He trained on the Percival Pott rotation. He continued his hand surgery fellowship training at the Pulvertaft hand centre in Derby combined with visiting fellowships to centres of excellence in hand surgery in USA (Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center), Barcelona (Institut Kaplan), Paris (Institut de la Main), India (Paul Brand Hand Unit and the Ganga Hospital). 

He is an honorary lecturer at Queen Marys University Hospital, London and an examiner for the BSSH Diploma in Hand Surgery. He is a reviewer for the Journal of hand surgery and faculty on the AO wrist fixation course.

Ordinary Members – medical practitioners with an interest in hand surgery and hold a surgical fellowship or equivalent qualification: Membership fee $100

Associate (Non voting) – medical practitioners, surgical trainees, hand therapists and allied professionals who have a medical degree or allied health qualification but not a surgical fellowship: Membership fee $30
